About
Joyous Tutoring
At Joyous Tutoring, we believe every child, regardless of their zip code, deserves the tools to pursue liberty, learning, and lasting joy. Our mission is grounded in the conviction that literacy is both a pathway to opportunity and an act of service that upholds dignity, fosters civic engagement, and builds personal freedom.
We train and pay high-achieving teens, known as the Joy Corps, to deliver free, customized, one-on-one literacy tutoring to America’s youth who need it most. By pairing younger students with teen mentors, we not only strengthen reading skills but also cultivate leadership, service, and community connection.
Rooted in Austin, Texas, where we partner with families, schools, and local organizations, we also extend our reach virtually to students across the nation, ensuring that access to high-quality literacy support is never limited by geography.

About
Mission
We train high-achieving teens as tutors to deliver free, customized 1:1 literacy support to America’s youth who need it the most.
About Us
We pair trained teen mentors with younger readers for one-on-one sessions. This cross-age model makes practice fun, strengthens confidence, and helps kids read more smoothly and understand what they read—while families stay in the loop and pay nothing. Why We Exist
Too many economically disadvantaged children begin school behind in reading and never catch up, limiting their opportunities to learn, work, and contribute fully to their communities. At Joyous Tutoring, we serve by providing free, high-quality literacy instruction to families in public housing and low-income communities, ensuring every child has the chance to thrive.

Our Founder’s Story
Our founder, Gabe Reid, grew up disconnected from most of the content in school. That changed at Morgan State University, a Historically Black College and University, where he encountered the powerful stories of leaders like Booker T. Washington and Thurgood Marshall who recognized their inherit dignity and chose to give their lives to a cause that benefits others. These stories ignited a lifelong passion for service.
Gabe’s career has spanned over a decade in public education, from classroom teacher to curriculum designer, as well as service as an AmeriCorps and Peace Corps volunteer. He holds an M.Ed. from the University of Houston in Curriculum and Instruction. His experiences showed him that serving students through personalized literacy instruction is not only transformative for children in underserved communities but also a source of deep personal purpose.
In his free time, Gabe loves traveling with his wife, taking his kids to the playground, and hooping.
